The Library is open: Monday through Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (closed Saturdays in July and August) and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings: 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

PARKING: On-street parking out front is limited to 30 minutes. Parking is available to the rear in the Market Yard Parking Lot (accessible from Center Street, East Main Street, or Mechanic Street). Our rear garden is enclosed by a white metal fence, so park near that, heeding the restrictions posted on parking-lot signs. Bicycles MUST be parked and LOCKED in provided racks (one near the side entrance, one outside the rear of our fence). Bicycles parked anywhere else may be subject to removal by authorities.
Some Basic Information:

WHO MAY BORROW MATERIAL? Any cardholder of the Freehold Public Library. To obtain a FREE card, patrons must demonstrate they 1) reside in Freehold Borough; OR 2) are employed with worksite located in Freehold Borough; OR 3) attend school within Freehold Borough (i.e., Freehold High School, Freehold Borough Public Schools, St. Rose of Lima School, Acelero Head Start, certain preschools). Those not entitled to a free library card may obtain one by paying a $10.00 annual fee (this is a great deal; trust me!). Hint: If you live in Freehold TOWNSHIP, you'll need to pay the fee to obtain a card (unless you work/attend school in Borough).

WHAT SERVICES DOES THE FREEHOLD PUBLIC LIBRARY OFFER?

MEDIA:
We have books for children and adults, as well as "Young Adult" selections; magazines; newspapers; etc. We also have "books on tape" cassettes and CDs, and music CDs. Our VHS Tape and DVD selection keeps movie lovers happy (this alone makes the non-resident $10.00 fee well worth paying). Just be aware that the loan period for movies is TWO DAYS.

TECHNOLOGY: We also offer "wireless" computer access (BYO laptop, tablet or other wi-fi enabled device), as well as public-access internet computers. Color printing from the internet or our computers is available ($.15/page). We also have a coin-operated (black & white) photocopy machine ($.15 per page). You may use flash-drives, disks, headphones, etc., that you bring in (we don't provide). We can offer some assistance (setting up an email account or beginning internet skills instruction) on an appointment basis.

ON-LINE ACCESS TO CARD CATALOG? Sorry; we don't offer remote access to catalog or borrowing services. To renew or request books, you may call the Library during business hours, or email one of us (our generic email is fplib@freeholdpubliclibrary.org). CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS: programs have included preschool storytime; "pajama storytime"; craft programs for elementary/intermediate children; summer reading program with crafts and incentives; Teen Library Committee events (parties, gaming nights, contests, etc.); Half-Day Happenings for elementary/middle school children; Family Afterschool Tea and Storytime for younger elementary and preschoolers; Afternoon Crafts for school-aged children, and other programs as the muse or popular demand advises. We've also hosted school, community, and Scout groups for special events, If you have a need, suggestion or idea, please contact us!

ART SHOW: Paintings and photographs by local artists are on display in the main level. The collection changes every few months.

SENIOR SERVICES: Upon request or at two-week intervals, a staff member goes to local senior citizen apartment complexes to bring resident patrons who have difficulty getting around books from the collection. If you'd like to be a part of this service, please contact library staff. Delivery and pick-up service is available to individuals with special needs on a case-by-case basis; please ask for details.

DISPLAY CASE: We have a display case in which we feature the collections or hobbies of community members/groups. If you're interested in supplying content for this display for one month, please contact us for information.

INTER-LIBRARY LOAN: We can often obtain books you want via the "ILL." If there's something you want which isn't on our shelf, ask at the Circulation Desk for help.

DOES THE LIBRARY HAVE A "FRIENDS" GROUP? Yes! Contact the library for more information about this great fan-club of our library.

WHAT ABOUT TEENAGERS? The Teen Library Committee (TLC) is a great opportunity for 6th graders through high school to earn volunteer hours, make friends, have fun and get leadership experience. Activities vary widely, depending on what the group plans.

NEWSLETTER? We have "hard copy" newsletters of our Library events published monthly, available at the Library, and "pdf" copies are emailed out to all our patrons who want to receive them. Copies are also accessible via our Facebook page. "Like" Freehold Public Library!

DOES THE LIBRARY HAVE ANY READING GROUPS? Yes! Join one once, or come every month. If you have an existing book group you'd like to share with a larger audience (or have meet at the Library), or are interested in forming/joining a new group, you know what to do (contact us...).

DOES THE LIBRARY HAVE ANY BOOKS IN SPANISH?
Yes; we have a number of Spanish and Spanish-English books for both adults and children. We can often obtain Spanish-language titles via Inter-Library loan.

Bookstuff Club (Elementary-aged patrons)

All elementary (k-5) school students welcome!

Wednesday afternoons, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. (See master schedule for exact dates).

Talk about your favorite books, do activities, games, crafts, etc.
Listen to books read out-loud (you get to pick which ones).
Try to talk Mrs. Mulholland into reading a book you liked (she's hard to please, so good luck!).
Help decide what books the librarian buys.
We'll use computers and other media types, too (movies, music, etc.).

You DON'T have to be an expert or ad-strong reader!
No book reports, no homework.
It will be different every time, depending on who shows up.

Preschool Storytime with Craft (3 and 4 year-olds)

The Freehold Public Library offers free (to cardmember families) children's programs including a weekly STORYTIME with CRAFT for 3 and 4 year-old children.

Advanced registration is required for this program; choose from Wednesday or Thursday mornings.

Don't hesitate to speak to a staff member if you have any suggestions or ideas. If there is sufficient interest, we can offer other programs/events. If you have a favorite book you'd like to recommend, let us know. If you'd like a staff member to share information about our Library at your event, that's doable too!

In addition, if you have a Scout, school or community group and would like to develop a customized program, let us know.

Family "Afternoon Tea"

This is a group of middle- and high school students who plan activities and promote the Library. We have lots of fun! It's also a good way to earn "volunteer hours" if you need them for school our youth program. There's plenty of room for more members, so join today. Pajama Storytime

The Friends of the Library provides periodic program opportunities which have included Master Gardeners and "Meet the Author" events. If you are interested in volunteering your special talent or presentation for a Library audience, contact the Library for information.

The Friends of the Library meets (typically) on the last Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Please see the Master Schedule or contact the Library to confirm.

Computer Help Available

UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

First, some quick facts:
--The Library building was erected in 1903...the same year as Orville and Wilbur Wright flew at Kitty Hawk ("the first airplane flight.")

--Andrew Carnegie, who became very rich by investing in industries such as steel and railroads, donated the money to build this library. There were certain conditions, which were met, to receive grant money. The initial grant was $11,000 ("in 1903 dollars") and was awarded on March 27, 1903.

--Freehold was the second Carnegie Library in New Jersey.
